This is quite lengthy - mostly just as a journal/ make my mom smile update type thing so read only if you have a few extra minutes.

James had immunizations today and Jonathan couldn't stand it. It was really quite adorable. There was a plastic alligator in the doctor's office. He told the nurse “Don’t poke my little brother" and advised her to let the alligator eat the shots. He seemed to understand that the shots were needed so that "James won't get sick", but it was quite traumatic for him to see James hurt.

We made a Christmas star out of gum drops and toothpicks at the little co-op preschool I do for two hours each Thursday morning with a few other moms. He loves his little star and hasn’t eaten a single gum drop. I even gave him permission to and he says, “I don’t want to eat it. It’s special to me.” Where’d he ever learn that kind of self-mastery? Sometimes I forget he’s only two.

As long as I’m on the topic of Jonathan -what a sweetie he's been lately. He's always saying, "Please, thank you, oh, that's OK" gives hugs and kisses like a pro. and told me he missed me "really, really big" when I left him for a couple hours with Michael on Saturday. Wouldn't it be great if he stays this polite? It's funny how he goes in and out of easy and hard stages.

It’s so fun to watch Michael and him play together. Lucky Mike, he gets to look forward to wrestling, dancing, hanging out in Jonathan’s “tent” or doing Capoeira with Jonathan everyday after work. Today Jonathan called "Daddy" to tell him, “Baby James wants you to come home”. I’m glad he likes having him around.

James stats as of today:

16 lbs 8 oz - 72% He just had his first rice cereal last night. I hope solids help him fill out a little - chubby babies are so cute.

26 1/2 in - 90%

HC - 17 1/2 in - 75%

His hands always seem to be a little cold, he has the most endearing dimple when he smiles, and giggles whenever I pretend to eat him. I don't know if it is biological because he is my offspring, but biological or not, I love his baby smell.

I hope our boys can stay close and hang out a lot at our place after they leave home for game nights, sports and hanging out. I have fond memories of going to my grandparents and having us each take a spot laying on the floor, the couches or chairs and just talking and having my grandpa tell stories. My grandma absolutely adored my dad. Maybe he really could do no wrong in her eyes. Maybe she was supporting him in his role as a dad by making him look good in our eyes. Either way, I hope I can be that way with our boys... We'll see, easier said than done.

December 14 Update

James played baby Jesus in the ward nativity and Jonathan was a little lamb. I hope to get a few pictures to post soon.

When I tell Jonathan he’s a handful he tells me “No, I’m a cutie pie”.

A little over a month ago I told Jonathan we were going to go outside and he could jump in some puddles. His response was, “Mom, what’s a puddle?”

If James’ eyes stay as blue as they are now, his wife will be a lucky lady. It seems like people always comment on his beautiful eyes. If people comment on Jonathan, it is almost always on his hair. It isn’t often that you see a little guy with such strawberry blond hair that sticks straight up. I’ve always been a fan of Calvin and Hobbes. I guess Michael and I were sent our own little Calvin.

Tonight, while I read Jonathan books with James on my lap he decided to get his own "baby lion" and treated him like a baby - so adorable.

Jonathan informed us that 16 is no longer the age limit for a driver’s license. He is quite confident it has been changed to 3. No wonder he is looking forward to his third birthday so much.

Uncle Paul had a meeting in Del Mar this morning and brought Grandpa down with him. The boys and I jumped out of bed and drove up to their hotel for a quick visit. Jonathan was quite distraught that he "forgot to give Daddy a kiss and a hug" before he went to work but I told him he could give Great Grandpa D. a hug and kiss and that seemed to make it better. Visiting with Grandpa makes me miss our weekly visits with him and Grandma growing up. What a blessing it is to have him around.

Jonathan: potty training, smiles, hugs, energy, needing lots of sleep, wants to be with his family forever, said “Baby James threw a pillow at me”, hmm?

James: bundle of joy, dimples, rolling over, takes a bottle (hooray), cuddler

Penitent Protector

Mike here. Jonathan is so funny. I'd like to share with you a few conversations I had with him recently.

Jonathan and I were playing on our patio the other day. I had just gotten back from work and it had been an unusually difficult day. Wondering if he sensed my discouragement, I explained to him that I tried to help people at work and they didn't want my help so it made me sad. Jonathan thought for a second, then looked me right in the eye and said "Jonathan kick people, nice Daddy." I was flattered that he would stand up for me against those that made me sad. However, not wanting to encourage violence, I explained "No, Jonathan. We do not kick people. If we are playing with someone and they don't want to play with us or if they don't want our help, we just say `That's okay. I'll go somewhere else.' And then we go play somewhere else. We do not kick them." And then it made sense to me...I have 79 other accounts to work with, so I'll go somewhere else. Thanks, kiddo, for helping me see things in the right perspective...in a roundabout way.

A couple of days later, Jonathan was sitting on my lap at the computer. We make a really good team. I move the mouse around and he clicks for me when I ask him to. He's the best. Out of the blue, he told me, "Jonathan not hurt people anymore. Jonathan not be mean anymore. Jonathan be nice Baby James now." He is a reformed young man, penitent of his grievous past. I couldn't be more proud.

This morning we were gardening out on our patio. It was a little cool and windy outside. Ruth even closed the door she was getting so cold with the icy 73 degrees indoors and the bitterly cold 65 degrees outdoors. Her blood must be turning Californian ;) Jonathan and I were discussing the unusual weather and I pointed out to him that even though it was a little cold the sky was really blue and pretty. He looked up and said, "Sky pretty like Mommy." Ruth is every bit deserving of the compliment.

Abraco,
Mike

Jonathan is at a really fun stage. This morning I told him he was a “cutie pie” and he informed me that no, he was just “a son and a boy, not a cutie pie”.

He says phrases like:

No problem

Calm down

Sounds like a good idea.

He saw a few men riding on horses and decided that they must have gone potty to get their horses.

James is in the 90%tile with weight, height and head circumference.

My Honey's a Hottie

Hello. Mike here.

My little family and I were walking down the street the other day on our way to a friend's house. Ruth was walking ahead, looking for the address since we were having trouble finding the place. She was also carrying a few bags of things to take to our friends. Jonathan and James were in the stroller and I was pushing them along.

A couple of guys were walking in the opposite direction. First they walked by Ruth. I didn't notice anything unusual. As they approached me, one of them asked, "Was that your wife that just walked by?"

"Yes," I responded.

"Wow. I'm jealous," the guy told me.

What??!! My honey is such a hottie that (even though she dresses completely modestly) I can't take her anywhere without her breaking some guy's heart because she is already married to me.

I know, I'm the luckiest. I love you, Honey.

The Latest on Jonathan

On occasion, I will tell James that I need to spend a little time with Jonathan and that he will have to wait. Of course, it is normally Jonathan having to wait for James. Anyway, the other day James was crying and I told him he would have to wait while I spent a little time with Jonathan. Jonathan quickly took my hand and as we were walking out of the room he said, “Sorry baby James”.

My parents came down with my grandpa for James’ blessing. It was great to have them and for them to watch the boys while Mike and I went out for a couple of hours. Of course, Jonathan didn’t go to bed for them. When we came home we found him cuddled up on his great grandpa’s lap watching a movie. Nevermind that it was an old war drama, any excuse to stay up with grandparents.

This last week as I was putting the boys in the car Jonathan pointed out to me that the opening to the gas tank was the car’s “belly button”.

Mike has been out of town for the week in Florida so my parents stayed a few days after the blessing to keep me company. Although Jonathan didn’t mention Mike being gone much he did point out to me that the reason “baby James” was crying was because he missed his daddy.

I went into Jonathan’s room the other night after he should have been asleep only to find him with his eyes shut and fake snoring. I had no idea he even knew how to fake snore. It was quite cute especially because he thought it was so great that he was tricking me that he was smiling “in his sleep”.

I gave Jonathan the chore of making sure “baby James” was happy. I left the room for a couple of minutes, didn’t hear anything and came back to find him pushing his little brother’s nose like it was a button.

Jonathan likes to hold hands with his little brother and say, “We’re friends”.

He’s started saying, “Hmm?” after asking questions - so adorable.

We were in the car yesterday and saw a young boy riding a bike with his dad. Jonathan said "Boy riding bike. That boy go potty." He definitely understands the significance of his potty chart, which rewards him with a new bike once he has gone on the potty 25 times. Only 18 more times to go. You can do it!

James is sweet and seems to be getting bigger each day - fun stuff.
